The Eighth Elena Obraztsova International Competition of Young Vocalists will be held in St. Petersburg within the period of August 23 – 26, 2020

A gala opening and closing of the Competition and also auditions take place at the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella (Moika river embankment, 20).

Present Competition is established in 2006 by The Elena Obraztsova Cultural Centre and a great Russian singer Elena Obraztsova as an important educational project in the area of classical music, aimed at shaping the younger generation and exposing it to classical music art.

The Competition is held by The Elena Obraztsova Cultural Centre and The Charitable Foundation of Support for the Music Art «The Elena Obraztsova Foundation», supported by the Presidential Grants Foundation and St. Petersburg Committee for Culture.

The Competition is aimed at developing promising young vocalists and improvement of their performance skills, as well as at broadening of creative contacts between Russian and foreign musicians.

The program of the Competition includes a concert performed by the Prize Winners of The Elena Obraztsova International Competitions of Young Vocalists of previous years.

Participants

Participants between the ages of 9 and 17 years, as at August 23, 2020, are allowed to take part in the Competition.

The academic solo singing competition consists of two rounds – qualifying and final.
There are three age groups:
   I age group – 9-11 years
   II age group – 12-14 years
   III age group – 15-17 years

Applying for the competition

The documents are accepted since December 5, 2019, in two phases:

  1. Filled APPLICATION FORM should be sent to the E-mail address: office@obraztsova.spb.ru
    (Attention! At this phase the letters that containing complete package of documents will not be processed)
  2. After confirmation of the electronic application form by the Directorate of the Competition, complete package of documents should be sent to the email address: office@obraztsova.spb.ru

Deadline for applying is April 15, 2020, 6:00 p.m. Moscow time; complete package of documents should be sent before May 15, 2020, 6:00 p.m. Moscow time.

Documents requested:

  1. Completed application based on the form approved by the Directorate of the Competition (in Word program only)
    The program specified in the application sent before May 15, 2020 cannot be changed
  2. Portrait photo of the contestant in electronic format, in high resolution (not less than 2 MB) to be printed in the competition’s booklet
  3. Copy of an identity document or a passport copy
  4. Short CV of the contestant (not more than 300 characters, in Word program)

All the documents should be presented in Russian or English languages.
Participant of the Competition should be held liable for an accuracy of information given to the Directorate of the Competition.

Every registered candidate will receive an official confirmation by email not later than on June 25, 2020.

A contestant confirms his/her participation in the Competition by email sent to the address office@obraztsova.spb.ru before June 25, 2020. Participation confirmation means that a contestant agrees to the terms and conditions of the Competition.

If there is a need to receive a calling invitation for submission to an educational institution, the participant should send the full legal name of the institution, the department name, the full name of the supervisor, and specify the class/course and the teacher’s full name.

Directorate of the Competition reserves the right to use all the information materials and photos for provision of information to mass media.

The Elena Obraztsova Cultural Centre (St. Petersburg) and The Charitable Foundation of Support for the Music Art «The Elena Obraztsova Foundation» (Moscow) have all the rights for audio and video recording during the Competition.

Accompanists

Directorate of the Competition can provide a participant with a skilled accompanist according to the preliminary application form, which should be sent by the participant before April 15, 2020.

The price for accompanists’ services is 3,000 rubles; this sum should be paid during a registration of the contestants on August 23, 2020.

In case of performance with an accompanist provided by the Directorate of the Competition, foreign participants should send sheet music of the works performed in the 1st and 2nd Rounds not later than on May 20, 2020 to the address office@obraztsova.spb.ru

In case of participation with a personal accompanist, the entire accompanist’s invitation and accommodation related costs should be covered by the contestant.

Rehearsals

Directorate of the Competition provides every contestant with classes and time to rehearse.

Admission fee

Foreign participants should pay the admission fee in amount of 5,000 rubles in cash on the day of registration – August 23, 2020. In case of non-participation of the contestant, documents and admission fee won’t be returned!

Hotel accommodation

Participants of the 1st Round and their accompanying persons bear all the expenses related to their arrival, departure and hotel accommodation.

Directorate of the Competition provides and pays for the hotel accommodation of the participants of the 2nd Round (at the hotel suggested by the Directorate).

Concert clothes

To perform at the competition contestants should have concert clothes: concert suit for boys, concert dress for girls.

Participation in the Competition means that a contestant agrees to the terms and conditions of the Competition. In case of disagreement in interpreting the present conditions of The Elena Obraztsova International Competition of Young Vocalists the Rules in the Russian language shall prevail.

SCHEDULE OF THE COMPETITION

 August 23, 10:00 a.m. – Registration of participants of the Competition
 August 23, 5:00 p.m. – Online ceremonial opening of the Competition and Gala Concert of the Prize Winners of The Elena Obraztsova International Competitions of Young Vocalists of previous years
 August 24-25, 10:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. – 1st (qualifying) Round (all age groups)
 August 26, 11 a.m. – 2nd (final) Round (all age groups)
 August 26, 6:00 p.m. – Ceremonial closing of the Competition and Gala Concert of the Prize Winners of the Competition

 

ORDER OF HOLDING THE COMPETITION

The contestants should arrive not later than at 10:00 a.m. on August 23, 2020.

Upon arrival every participant of the Competition should be registered.

The registration will be held at the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella (Moika river embankment, 20).

The draw ceremony will be held on August 23, 2020 at the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella (Moika river embankment, 20).The order of the performances is defined by the draw ceremony and is valid till the end of the Competition.

All contestants who have presented all the documents requested to the Directorate of the Competition, in time and according to the rules stated in present regulations of the Competition, are allowed to participate in the 1st Round.

Not more than 40% participants of the 1st Round are allowed to take part in the 2nd Round of the Competition.

All auditions are open for public.

The Prize Winners and their accompanists are obliged to take part without compensation in the closing concert of the competition and in the concerts arranged by The Elena Obraztsova Cultural Centre and The Elena Obraztsova Foundation - two times in period up to the December 31, 2021.

Results of the Competition are determined by the decision of the international Jury, which includes outstanding musicians, singers and vocal teachers:

  • Peter Dvorsky (Slovakia) - opera singer
  • YunHong Zhao (China) - opera singer, professor at the Beijing Conservatory
  • Dame Gwyneth Jones (UK) - opera singer
  • Adrian Mueller (Switzerland-Germany) - conductor
  • Ruzanna Lisitsian (Russia) - opera singer, Honored Artist of Russia, professor of The Gnesins Russian Academy of Music

The Jury members don’t have the right to take part in the Competition as accompanists or coaches of the contestants.

If a Jury member is a teacher of a contestant, he/she doesn’t take part in a voting in evaluating the results of this contestant’s auditions.

The Jury has the right to decide that a contestant’s program can be shortened or that his/her performance can be stopped, with the agreement of all the jury members.

The Jury has the right not to award some kind of prizes.

The Jury does not have the right to change prizes and awards stated in the regulations.

Jury’s decisions are final and can’t be revised.

First age group (9 – 11 years)

1st Round (qualifying)
Duration of a performance – not longer than 10 minutes
  1. A folk song with piano accompaniment (a capella performance is allowed and encouraged)
  2. A vocal work written by a composer for voice and piano of the contestant's choice

2nd Round (final)
Duration of a performance – not longer than 10 minutes
  1. A song from a children’s film, performance, cartoon or children’s music fairy-tale
  2. A vocal work by a composer of the 19th-20th centuries

Second age group (12 – 14 years)

1st Round (qualifying)
Duration of a performance – not longer than 12 minutes
  1. A vocal work by a composer of the 17th-18th centuries
  2. A romance or a song written by a composer for voice and piano, of the contestant's choice

2nd Round (final)
Duration of a performance – not longer than 12 minutes
  1. A romance by a Russian composer of the 19th-20th centuries
  2. A romance or a song by a foreign composer of the 18th-20th centuries

Third age group (15 – 17 years)

1st Round (qualifying)
Duration of a performance – not longer than 15 minutes
  1. A chamber vocal work by a composer of the 17th-18th centuries
  2. A romance or a song by a composer of the 19th-20th centuries

2nd Round (final)
Duration of a performance – not longer than 15 minutes
  1. An aria from an opera by a Russian composer of the 18th-20th centuries
  2. An aria from an opera by a foreign composer of the 18th-20th centuries

 

All works should be performed by heart.
Each work can be performed just in one round.

GRAND PRIX – 60 000,00 rubles (regardless of the contestant’s group)

Third Prize – 20 000,00 rubles and a title of the Prize Winner

All contestants will be awarded the certificate of the Competition.
Teachers and accompanists who have prepared young musicians for the Competition will be awarded the letter of appreciation.

Participants of the 2nd (final) Round of all age groups who won’t become the laureates will be awarded the diploma of the Competition, a title of the diploma holder and commemorative gifts.
